By early afternoon Tuesday, police had logged 273 calls while fire services handled 241, with medical assists accounting for two-thirds of that fire volume as usual. Two significant residential fires—one on McLevin Avenue early this morning and another on Ontario Street just after 3am—kept crews busy through the night and into the morning.
Monday was a fairly standard day with 558 police calls and 535 fire calls, the latter driven primarily by 351 medical assists. Disorderlies dominated the police dispatch board with 73 calls, followed by collision responses and welfare checks. Light rain and moderate winds did little to dampen the usual evening surge around 8pm.
This week is tracking slightly below the 7-day average on both fronts, though it's early yet. Month-to-date numbers sit at just over 2,000 police calls with disorderlies and unknown trouble continuing to anchor the complaint mix. Highrise residential fires have been notably active—seven 2-alarm or greater incidents in the past week alone, suggesting a troubling trend in older building stock.
Seven major residential fires in seven days warrants attention, particularly the concentration in highrise units. This is above the recent monthly pace of 36 such incidents per 30 days, though small sample size makes it hard to call this definitively unusual.
